[고등과학원 초학제연구 올해의 주제 연구단] 강연 안내

고등과학원 초학제 연구 ‘올해의 주제(Toward a Unified Science of Mind-Brain)’ 연구단입니다. 지난 7월 25일에는 Edouard Machery 교수님의 강연이 있었습니다. 이번에는 Richard Samuels교수님을 모시고, 심리학과 신경과학 간의 관계에 대해 들어볼 예정입니다.

- 강연자 소개: Richard Samuels is a professor of philosophy at The Ohio State University. He formerly held appointments at the University of Pennsylvania and King's College London, and has had visiting fellowships at a number of institutions, including the London School of Economics and the Center for Philosophy of Science, at Pittsburgh. Professor Samuels works primarily on issues in the philosophy of psychology and foundations of cognitive science, where he has published extensively on such topics as modularity, nativism, and the computational theories of mind. He is a co-editor of the Oxford Handbook of Philosophy of Cognitive Science. In addition to finishing a book on cognitive architecture he is currently conducting empirical research in the cognitive science of science.

- 강연 요지: What is the relationship between psychology and neuroscience? For much the past half century it has been widely assumed by philosophers of mind and cognitive scientists that psychological explanations are in some important sense distinct or autonomous from the explanations provided by neuroscience. In recent years this consensus has been eroded, in part due to progress within the neurosciences, but also due to developments within the philosophy of science. In this talk I consider whether, in light of these developments, it is still tenable to hold that psychological explanations are autonomous.
