[서울대학교 과학학화] 과학철학 분야 해외저명학자 초청강연 (Prof. Edouard Machery)

선생님, 안녕하십니까?

2023년 서울대학교 과학철학 해외저명학자 초청강연의 연사로는 피츠버그대학의 에두아르 마셔리(Edouard Machery) 교수를 모셨습니다. 마셔리 교수는 피츠버그대학 과학사 및 과학철학과의 석좌교수로 재직하고 있으며 2016년부터는 과학철학센터의 소장(Director)를 맡고 있습니다. 이번 강연에서 마셔리 교수는 현대 과학 연구에서 커다란 문제로 제기되고 있는 재현 위기(replication crisis)의 원인을 진단하고 현대 과학의 신뢰성에 관해 우리가 가져야할 적절한 태도에 관해 논의할 것입니다. 여러분의 많은 관심과 참여를 바랍니다.

• 제목: Beyond Incentives
• 요약: Many believe that the replication crisis is in part due to the incentives created by the reward structure of science (“the perverse-incentives hypothesis”). This talk argues that the perverse incentives hypothesis is unsupported and plausibly at best only partially true, and develops an alternative: The enculturation account.

• 제목: Should We Trust Science?
• 요약: To many science appears to be under attack, and historians and philosophers of science as well as scientists themselves have been pushing back against what they see as a corrosive skepticism (e.g., Oreskes; de Melo-Martin and Intemann; Sinatra and Hofer). We are intimated, as the bumper speaker, to “follow the science." In this talk, based on my new book manuscript, I will argue that we should on the contrary be skeptical of much of science.
